Accessory maker Genki showcased a 3D-printed mockup of what it claims to be the Nintendo Switch 2 at CES, and we were fortunate enough to get our hands on it and snap some high-resolution shots. 📸
Although Nintendo itself is not present at CES, it certainly made a splash through Genki’s reveal. The Switch 2 mockup is noticeably wider than its predecessor and features slightly larger Joy-Con controllers, which seem more comfortable to grip. When compared to the Steam Deck OLED, the mockup of the Switch 2 still feels more compact, mainly due to the less pronounced Joy-Con ergonomics compared to the Deck’s grips. However, the overall size is closer to Valve’s handheld than the original Switch. 🎮
As rumored previously, the Switch 2's Joy-Cons will attach to the console using magnets instead of the traditional sliding rail. According to Genki cofounder and CEO Eddie Tsai, removing the Joy-Con requires pressing a button on the top of the controller's back. This releases a pin that disconnects the magnets, making it easy to detach. While Tsai mentioned that brute force could also remove the controllers, the design ensures they stay secure during normal use. 🔌
Moreover, there is an optical sensor inside the mounting channel of the Joy-Cons, and with an additional attachment, these controllers may offer mouse-like functionality, resembling features seen in Lenovo’s Legion Go handheld. 🖱️
Nintendo has confirmed that it will officially reveal the Switch's successor before April 2025, and as this date approaches, leaks and rumors continue to emerge. A December 2024 video from SwitchUp showed a 3D-printed Switch 2 mockup, which appeared similar to the current model but larger and sporting a new USB-C port and a square button under the Home button on the right Joy-Con.
The Dbrand accessories company also teased their “Killswitch 2” case, hinting at a magnetically-attached Joy-Con and other potential features. While the mystery of the square button remains unsolved, it’s clear that details about the Switch 2 are slowly becoming clearer. 🔍
With the April 2025 deadline getting closer, it won’t be long before Nintendo officially unveils the Switch 2, but for now, we can admire the leaked photos of this intriguing new hardware. 🌟
